The Himalayas are not merely a geographical feature, a range of mountains. they epitomise a people's civilisational identity that goes back to the dawn of history. If these majestic mountains were not there, the rain clouds sweeping up from the Indian Ocean would have passed over the Indian subcontinent into central Asia leaving it a burning desert.

The Manali - Malana Village Trek

Duration : 5 Days

Grade : Easy to Moderate

The Period of Operation : May to October

Rating : Easy to moderate trek

Highest Altitude : 4450 m

Day 1: Manali-Naggar. By Surface Transport. 30 minutes.
Explore Naggar - Roerich Art Gallery and Naggar Castle . Begin trekking after lunch; about 2 hours walk to the ancient village of Rumsu through thick forests and meadows. Camp.

Day 2: Rumsu -Base of Chanderkhani Pass 5-6 hours
A steep and later moderate climb through forests of Oak, Pine and Deodar to the Chanderkhani ridge. Excellent views of the surrounding mountains. Camp

Day 3: Chanderkhani Base - Malana Village 7-8 hours
A long day but worth the effort. The climb to the pass is not strenuous but the steep rocky descent to Malana can be tiring. Great views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges can be had from the pass. Camp outside the village.

Day 4: Explore Malana Village .
Malana is an unusual village set amidst the backdrop of towering mountain peaks and relatively isolated. Steeped in legend, one story has it that the inhabitants are the descendants of lost soldiers from Alexander's army. The people still believe in their own laws and do not allow the use of leather within their village. Today with a Hydel project close by development is slowly creeping in. The architecture of the buildings is distinct and so are the people. Evening return to camp.

Day 5: Malana – Jari. 3 Hours and another hour and a half back to
Manali by road transport.
